Where to get the YouTube subtitle file
YouTube Studio → Content → your video → Subtitles → three-dot menu next to the language → Download (.srt or .sbv). If you only have auto-generated captions, publish them first and fix obvious errors before translating.
How to use the translated file
Subtitles → Add language → Upload file → With timing → choose the translated file → Publish. The track appears in minutes; search impact takes days to weeks.
Tip
Translate into several languages at once (Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese are the usual winners for English channels) and upload each file. Keep the formal register for tutorials, casual for vlogs.
Questions
- SRT or SBV?
- Both upload back without conversion. SBV is YouTube's own export; SRT is more portable.
- Do translated tracks help ranking?
- Uploaded tracks are indexed in that language; auto-translated captions are not.
- Can I translate Shorts subtitles?
- Yes — Shorts use the same subtitle system as long videos.
